For golf, it was SFT (See, Feel, Trust). It was seeing your shot, feeling the shot in your hands, and then trusting your shot and hitting it with conviction. My old junior college coach likes to add one more thing to it: deal with it. It's accepting the outcome of your shot, regardless. It was about remaining calm in both the good and bad. For life, it was about a relationship with Jesus and knowing that golf is merely a game.
For my first competitive round in 5 months, I didn't know what to expect. Then a text came from my dad just prior to my tee time. It said: S F T. I applied the S F T D to my game.

I won my Houston City Am qualifier with a 69.

I won it by chipping in from 30 yards on the final green. I won it by making 7 birdies on the round. I made it by making putts 20-30 feet...something that rarely happens. I won it by trusting my game. I won it because Jesus gave me a sense of calmness I haven't felt on the course in a long time.

After I chipped in on the last hole, I put my sunglasses on and gave thanks to Jesus while my playing partners finished out the hole.

You can check out my scorecard and results here

It has been a long time since I won a tournament/qualifier on an individual basis. Hopefully this great playing translates over to the Houston City Am Oct. 7-9.

Numerical Summary for the Round of 69:

7 - number of birdies and pars on the day. Like I said: roller coaster.

0 - number times I was concerned about time, checking my phone concerned about the outside world, worried about the pace of play. When you are calm and in a zone, nothing really matters.

10 - minutes spent on my warm up before the round. I hit some perfect iron shots on the range, made a handful of putts and hit 2 great chip shots. My warm up was a stark contrast to the normal 45 minute warm up I normally prepare for.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11234618915123569.post-14634546571526788242011-09-05T12:24:00.003-05:002011-09-05T12:49:34.450-05:00Seven Days In UtopiaIf you have any free time in the next few weeks and love the game of golf, go check out Seven Days in Utopia. Last night I walked over to the movie theater (weather in Houston cooled to a nice 93*) and watched one of the best golf/life books I have read in a long time. Most golf books are either working on your physical or mental aspects of the game but this book/movie shows the true importance in life: a relationship with Jesus.

It's not a movie that will break box office records or something that will be award winning, but the message is timeless and puts life into perspective. I am not much of a movie-goer but this was too good to pass up.

Numerical Summary for the Labor Day Weekend:

4 - hours watching the Baylor/TCU game. If you didn't watch the game, you missed an Instant Classic. And you're crazy to think that I wasn't at the game. Sic Em.

1 - number of comments hurled from me to folks wearing purple after the game. Why do I mention this? Because the only time I opened my mouth, someone behind me asked if I was trying to start a fight. Who was it? The youth pastor at the baptist church near my parents house that I have visited before. Tell me God doesn't have a sense of humor.

6:45 - AM tee time the morning following the Baylor game. I got 4 hours of sleep and then was on the golf course for 4 hours. If only life was that generous to give me equal parts sleep and golf.
Here is a sample of the golf I experienced during my trip:

Our main focus is to pull gas and liquids from the ground and put it a pipe for refineries. For the first 4 years on the job, I reported all of the spending on US capital projects. About a year ago, just before my company went through a massive expansion through acquisitions, I was moved to focus solely on our Permian (West Texas/East New Mexico) area which has quickly become the most active region in the world for my company. It's fun to see more of the operations side of a region that has 25 rigs running on a daily basis.

We have operations in Australia, Chile, Argentina, Egypt, UK, United States and Canada...which brings me to the subject of this post. Our Canada operations are based in Calgary, Alberta. The Calgary office recently lost their capital reporting accountant and are in need of someone to come up for a few weeks to run the reports and analysis. My 'bat phone' lit up a few weeks ago and within a few hours, I had my flight and hotel stay for two weeks in downtown Calgary. My tasks for the two weeks are pretty simple: get the work done efficiently and timely, and once that is done...PLAY SOME GOLF!

Calgary is similar to Denver with the layout - mountains to the west, plains to the east. My timing couldn't be any better as the company's golf tournament will be played on the only Friday I will be in Calgary. You're crazy to think I wouldn't be signed up to play. The course we are playing is to the east of town, so it looks to be a fairly flat course but at a good elevation.

For the weekend, I am renting a car and heading west to the 'young' Rockies. Numerous co-workers have told me to go see this lake or this mountain lodge, etc. Thanks but no thanks. My car is going to Stewart Creek on Saturday and then Kananaskis on Sunday for 36 holes of awesomeness. With daylight lasting for a good 15 hours, I should have plenty of time to enjoy the rounds. That's 72 holes of golf for the weekend with 54 holes of golf in a 2 day span...in the sheer Rockies, at high elevations...life will be pretty incredible. I sure hope I remember to take plenty of photos to remember this trip.

Kananaskis:

Stewart Creek:

Oh yeah, I get home on Thursday around 9:30pm and head straight to Galveston for a little weekend beach party. The weather in Calgary: low 70s. The weather in Galveston upon my return: mid 90s.

Numerical Summary for the week:

4 - hours spent at a Slip-N-Slide party yesterday. Yes, a bunch of 20 and 30-somethings got together on an inflatable slip-n-slide and I have to tell you...it was a lot of fun. I was given the task to provide music for the party and I succeeded with my wide selection of old school hip-hop. Thanks Snoop and Biggy.

12 - as in noon, which has been the average tee time for me the last few rounds. Nothing strains the body more than playing golf in heat index north of 100 and humidity around 80%. Hey, at least I know I am not the only idiot out there sweating profusely while hitting a small white ball around the course.

33 - days until the first Baylor football game. With baseball being the only sport going on right now, I am so ready for some football.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11234618915123569.post-37678979717101209882011-07-24T20:27:00.005-05:002011-07-24T21:46:43.144-05:00What's In the BagYea, I know it's been over a month since my last post. Since this is a golf blog and maybe someone out there is actually following me for golf purposes, I figured I would divulge what is in my bag and my choice for various golf items.

Driver: I did some research (as posted here) and I finally settled on the Titleist 910 D3 in 8.5* with an Oban Devotion 7X shaft. It took Titleist about a month to finally send me the correct driver, for some reason they thought I was right-handed, but ultimately my lefty driver arrived in the mail Friday and was in play today. The first few holes were shaky, but I didn't miss a single fairway on the back nine.

Fairway Wood: My fairway wood and hybrid are my throwback items. I had the worst time finding a fairway wood that was easy to hit and consistent off the tee and off the fairway. I tried the Titleist 909f, Callaway X Hot, Adams Super Hybrid, and TaylorMade Burner. Finally, the TaylorMade V Steel was on a website, brand new for $59...sold.

Hybrid: Nothing has been able to replace the Sonartec MD 19* in the past 4 years. Irons for all skill levels have become easier to hit. I am a firm believer that unless you are on TV every week for golf, there is no need to be playing blades. I have progressed from Cleveland CG1, to Titleist AP2 and now found THE set in the Adams CB2. Forgiveness is as important as workability in a set of irons. Do NOT forget that.

Sand/Lob Wedge: Since my irons came with a 50* gap wedge, I went with a 58* sand/lob wedge that is perfect around the greens. Cleveland is one of the few wedge companies that have various sole designs in left hand. Their DSG wedge is perfect for bunkers and deep bermuda grass.

Putter: The flat stick is something I either love or loathe. If it's hot, then I am posting some low numbers. However, recently, the putter has been a woman going through menopause. Hot one minute, cool the next. I have a couple in reserve (SeeMore mFgp reserve, Bettinardi B330, and a custom Slighter Snubnose), but the TaylorMade Kia Ma has taken the top spot.

Bag: I sport the Adidas University bag with the Starburst Jr Golf Tournament logo. We gave each of the 1,000+ kids a bag in last year's tournament. The shipment was so large that we had to store them in an 18-wheeler.

Balls: For the longest time, I used Titleist Pro V1x. For the longest time, Houston experienced numerous months of consistent rain. I switched to the TaylorMade Penta upon its release because it didn't spin as much in the wet conditions. Now, Houston is in a drought and I have switched back to the Pro V1x due to firm/dry conditions.

Shoes: Puma Special Edition. These are some of the smoothest shoes Puma has put out. Love the design to them and they are quite comfortable.

Belts: Um, you can't have Puma Special Edition shoes without the matching belt!!

As you can see, I thoroughly enjoy the world of golf. As an amateur, I consider myself to be on the long end of the distance spectrum throughout the bag. My drives are consistently around the 290 - 300 yard mark while hitting around 50% of fairways. Compared to the pros, I couldn't muster the strength to match their distance. Most of the pros had been measured over and over to find the right club head and shaft combo. The ease at which they swing and the distance they produced got me thinking about my current setup and how it might be completely wrong for me.

As a lefty, demo clubs are about as rare as a hurricane in Iowa. So instead of purchasing a bunch of custom ordered drivers and hoping one would work out, I traveled all over the Houston area to demo days. I found that 4 drivers are really worth taking a look at if you are a more skilled golfer.

Background: If there was a shaft upgrade available, I would choose that club. Otherwise, I was stuck with stock shafts for the demo. Titleist, Cobra and TaylorMade offer interchangeable shafts so they had an unfair advantage over the Callaway.

Specs: Avg swing speed - 116mph. Optimal Launch Angle - 10*. Optimal Spin Rate - 2700rpm. Avg Angle of Attack: -0.7*. Avg Smash Factor - 1.44

Cobra S3

Probably the most forgiving driver I have ever hit. Also, probably one of the worst stock shafts I have ever hit (Fujikura Blur). It was a little difficult to hit a consistently straight drive but man were they long. Cobra's elliptical face design really is cool because it applies to just about every golfer. Where are most of your mishits? High on the toe, low on the heel. Kudos to Cobra for the most realistic driver head on the market...just a shame that if you want a shaft to fit your game, you will need to pony up another $200 on top of the $300 price tag. Plus I love the name of the driver: S3...that's my initials. I should buy one solely for the label!
Final Grade: B- (Only because of the subpar shaft)

Callaway Razr Hawk Tour

Sweet Mary and Moses this is by far the longest, hottest driver on the market. Into the wind, this driver was about 15 yards further than any of the competition. Normal wind conditions, the Cally was tied with Titleist. Their stock shaft, the Aldila RIP, is a great shaft for most golfers...but not for me. I needed something to launch lower with a lot less spin. This is quite a step up from the FT-9 Tour. It is the only one of the 4 that features a fixed head unlike the other 3 adjustable heads.
Final Grade: A

Titleist 910 D3

Most of the time I skip over Titleist. Why? Because they have always been to hard for me to hit and they were the most unforgiving club in the shop. The last Titleist driver I owned was the 905R and it was a rocket...if you could find the sweet spot the size of a gnat's ass. This club completely changed my opinion about their forgiveness. This club actually HAS some forgiveness. I first hit the Diamana 'Ahina (the updated WhiteBoard) and thought I had fallen in love...that is until I put in the Oban Devotion shaft (a $150 upcharge) and this had a hard time not going in my bag. The adjustability of the club is nice and it is just enough to tinker but not overwhelm you.
Final Grade: A (would have given A+ but the price is a little steep)

TaylorMade R11

The tinker toy of the golf world. Yes, they are on TV more than we can count. Yes, out of the 9,756 options, 1 is bound to work for each golfer. However, the white driver is too bright for me in the Houston summer sun and the spin on this driver was way too high for me. I don't ground my club so the face angle adjustability doesn't come into effect. I tried the heaviest, stiffest shaft available and it still couldn't bring the spin rate down. For people with slower swings, you need spin to keep the ball airborne; however too much spin causes the ball to balloon and reduces roll.
Final Grade: B+

If you are in the market for a driver, please go get fitted. Do NOT buy right off the rack. There is so much technology out there that can find you the right combination. Sure, we would all like to blame the club instead of our swing, but if your driver is older than 3 or 4 years, you will benefit from the latest and greatest out there.

Numerical Summary for the Week:

1 - rounds of golf played in the last 4 weekends. Yes, I have been going through the typical withdrawal symptoms: shakes, nervous twitch, cold sweats and spontaneous golf swings in the office.

0 - number of good shows on this summer. Living on reruns is getting old and no I can't dance, she shouldn't date that guy and I am sure someone has a great voice.

25 - mpg average in the Shelby on my trek from Houston to New Braunfels, up to Waco and then back to Houston. The power went out in my apartment and all the clocks were flashing 12:00. I have black out shades so I didn't know what time it was. Once I found my phone, I was already awake. Still didn't make it to work until 8ish.

1 - year away from Facebook. I decided to reactivate my account...but I am already starting to regret it. So many incriminating photos out there.

15 - estimated crowd size for the lake party. I know the house can sleep a bunch of people but since I will be the 15th wheel, I have a feeling I will be sleeping in a closet. That may sound bad to some of you, but if you knew my vacation sleeping arrangements growing up...a closet is an upgrade!!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11234618915123569.post-64007749829077593372011-05-22T20:19:00.005-05:002011-05-22T21:10:41.971-05:00More Music...Less SilenceIf you know me or my lifestyle, you know there is always music playing. I live alone so the silence is usually filled with either Slacker or Pandora online radio. The last time I posted about music, it was more about websites, etc. This post is about what I am actually listening to these days. Judge my music all you want, make recommendations, it's all good.

First off I have to mention the best portable sounds system...ever. Sure you have seen the portable speakers for your ipod that maybe pumps some high treble but no bass. This 'sound cube of death' is well worth the sticker price (and extra $100 battery so you can use it off a/c power) and provides ample amounts of all-around great sound.
This is the Bosch Power Box Job Site Radio. The cage around the unit allows it to be dropped from a height of 7' and still operate without a hitch (I haven't tried it yet, nor do I plan on it anytime soon). It comes with a remote that is handy when you are too lazy to turn it up. It can operate in all environments; Bosch recommends just not submerging it in water...duh. It's perfect at the pool, beach, tailgate, etc. It is truly incredible with all the ports to hook up an iPod, a satellite radio dock, flash card, sim card, and cigarette lighter port. I ran the numbers and realized I was spending more on repairs than a monthly car payment. Sure, I wouldn't continue the streak of major repairs because soon enough I would have replaced just about everything on that heap!

My childhood friend works in the used car lot of a Chevy dealership in McGregor, TX (just outside of Waco). Two weeks ago, when I was busy replacing yet another transmission on the Accord, he calls me and says there is a 2007 Mustang Shelby GT (#1694 out of 6000 made) on his lot with low miles. So when I traveled to Waco for a charity golf tournament I stopped by the dealership.

This is it in my parking garage.

I am in my mid-life crisis stage already...at the ripe age of 30. Whether it is hunting or fishing, the guy is always outdoors. About 2 or 3 years ago, he invited me down to Galveston to go night fishing. A lot of the homes in the Morby Beach house neighborhood have submerged lights in the canal which you can see the fish circling the lights going after bait fish. One of the 'mother nature' triggers to go fish is a sudden drop in temperature, aka a good cold front, which the Houston area received Monday night, Tuesday morning.

Tuesday after work, I gathered my fishing gear, grabbed some soft bait lures (Berkley Gulp! Saltwater Pogy 3" Glow) at Academy, threw some ice in a cooler and headed an hour south to the beach house. I arrived around 9:15pm, located a underwater light with plenty of fish and my first line in was at 9:20pm. My first fish was on at about 9:23pm...however I was so excited about fishing that I forgot to grab a net and the first fish I caught, snapped my line as I attempted to bring the fish to the surface. Disgusted with myself, I went and found the sturdiest net I could find and retooled the fishing rod.

Fish 1, Shane 0

Most of the time spent fishing is actually driving around to find the lights. You can catch 1 fish per light before they all scatter and you have to move along. However, one house had 4 lights in a row. It was a new house right on the bay and there must have been 3 to 4 dozen red fish in the lights. Because it was such a large area, I was able to catch one on the right side of the lighted area and then immediately hook another one over in the left zone.

I fished until around midnight, catching 9 fish (8 red fish, 1 speckled trout) in about 45 minutes of actual fishing time. How big were these fish? The smallest I caught was a 17" red and the largest was a 24" red. I only kept 3 fish (2 reds and the 1 speck). Want to see what they looked like?

It was a really fun trip...until I had to clean my catch. I had seen Carter fileted many fish but never had done it myself. Let's just say the dock where I cleaned the fish looked like a murder scene after I was done. I didn't eat any of the fish myself, but gave it out to friends and family. Apparently its good eats! I finally made it back home around 2am Wednesday and let's just say I wasn't very productive that day at the office.

Stay tuned for my next post in which I discuss my impending mid-life crisis!!

Numerical Summary for the Week:

36 - holes of golf played this weekend. Played in the Waco Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament Friday morning and then just finished playing another round at Deerwood Country Club up in Kingwood.

352 - yards my drive went to win a long drive hole in the Chamber Tournament. I won a $50 gift card to Academy for my efforts. Hey! More fishing lures!!

100 - SPF I use if I am going to be outdoors. It's perfect for the course because 1 application is all you need. I do tone it down and go with SPF 70 for my face. Supposedly I am told to act my age, not get crazy at pool/beach parties, be able to hold conversations about wine, politics, economics and the arts, and cut out all the slang in my vocabulary. Yea, whatever.

One of the ways I have been saving money is that I watch TV the old fashioned way...via antenna. I don't have cable (which apparently is the WORSE thing in life because all of my friends introduce me as: hey, this is Shane...he doesn't have cable!!). My channel selection is limited to the basics but I can view most shows online via my laptop hooked up to the TV. I think the best channel ever in the Houston region is channel 55.2...the Vietnamese channel. Sure you can't understand it, but it challenges you to come up with your own story line. The Vietnamese music videos are just incredible. Yea, let me blow your mind about those mature talks concerning the arts when I bring Vietnam Idol into the convo!

I am not much of a movie guy but just recently I joined Netflix. They had a free month trial membership so I figured it couldn't hurt. The movies available for viewing online are a little limited but I have been discovering some really cool documentaries.

Food, Inc. - This goes into the food industry and discovers how the government and big business have monopolized the industry. It was shocking to see how the gov't is pushing corn and now a corn bi-product is in about 85% of all of our foods. It really did promote organic, locally grown foods. Of course I watched it while eating my processed dinner and decided I better shop at Whole Foods from here on out.

Restrepo - The creators follow a platoon in the deadliest valley in Afghanistan. The guys look so young and are immediately thrown into fire fights with the Taliban. They struggle when one of their friends is killed but find ways to make it through their 15 month deployment. I know the Iraq war got most of the attention during the Bush administration, but Afghanistan looks to be the most intense.

The Devil Came on Horseback - Darfur. I never really understood the magnitude of the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan...or why stars like George Clooney were so vocal about this area. An ex-marine was sent to monitor a cease-fire going on in Sudan and then started hearing reports about the mass killings in Darfur. The Sudanese gov't is basically using Arab rebels to wipe out the villagers in Sudan. All the villagers want is economic growth, a voice in the government, etc. If you can sit there, watch the movie, and not feel motivated to help then you might be a robot.

If you ever find yourself wanting a change of pace in your movie picks, look up some documentaries. Yes, they sound really boring, but I like them better than tween comedies or movies created by 5 year-olds (Fast and Furious series).

Nummerical Summary for the Week:

20 - average wind speed here in Houston over the past month. Absolutely kills your mental state on the golf course when it seems like every hole is into a strong head wind.

4 - wine bottles purchased at the grocery. That is 4 more than my all-time high. I will see what this grape drink is all about before making my final decision.

100 - SPF I use out at the pool just in case I manage to fall asleep in the sun. Sure you have to give it a good scrub in the shower to wash it off and sure it seeps into your blood stream once you apply it...but by golly, that stuff works!

30 - years on this here earth. God has given me quite a roller coaster but I have no regrets. I am a better person than where I was a month, a year, a decade ago.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11234618915123569.post-77948281887970177702011-04-10T20:21:00.004-05:002011-04-10T21:49:00.635-05:00Capitol HillI've never made it to our nation's capital. Having access to PBS, I get all the sight seeing I want from the comfort of my own couch! However, a good family friend has lived in DC for the past 7 years and she turned 30 this weekend. She sent me an invite a few months ago and I figured this was my chance to go. Free flight (using miles), free lodging (staying on the birthday girl's couch) and free transportation, heck even my frugal grandpa couldn't pass up this opportunity.

When I left Houston on Friday, it was 83*, sunny and my friends were headed to the pool. Upon my arrival to DC, it was rainy, 48* and just nasty.
The city was crazy with the potential government shutdown. I was even shuttled to capitol hill (the house side) because my friend was about to be put on furlough and had emergency meetings all afternoon...as you all know, congress reached a temporary agreement so the stress was quickly relieved.

As I waited in an office while the meetings were proceeding, I found my favorite beer in a fridge: Yuengling. This stuff is absolutely incredible but only sold on the east coast. When my friends take trips to the east coast, I pay them a premium to bring back Yuengling Lager. Oh, I definitely had 2 beers in the congressional building. How many of you can say that?!My friend lives just northeast of the Capitol building in a very cool, very old neighborhood. Most of the homes were built in the late 1800's/early 1900's. The neighborhood had lots of small parks for the insane dog population. Just about everyone I saw walking around had a dog on a leash.
So Friday night was a small dinner with the birthday girl, her mom and her mom's friends from Tyler. We went to Rosa Mexicano and had some really outstanding food. I went in with a snobby Texas attitude thinking that they wouldn't compare to the food in Houston. Well, I was humbled right off the bat. If you ever find yourself in DC and want some great Mexican food, I say Rosa's without a doubt. I ordered the Pork Chamorro (similar to carnitas)...which they should have labeled the leg of a T-Rex.After dinner, we ventured to a few bars with all of her friends. Most were cool people but I never met a single person that was born in DC. All were imported from around the country. At around 2:30, we decided to call it a night, but not before stopping at a local food landmark: Ben's Chili Bowl. At 3am, I scarfed down a chili dog and chili cheese fries. Absolutely incredible food. The line was out the door.
So Saturday was spend digesting the late night snack and walking around the Georgetown area. We finally found some time to relax and watch the Masters. That night was spent at a family style Italian restaurant and grabbing drinks at a really good tequila bar...my favorite kind of establishment!

So it's Masters Sunday...the absolute pinnacle golf day every year. And where am I? On a bus...heading through Virginia...to a couple of wineries...for the ENTIRE DAY! It was brutal but once I came to the realization that I wouldn't watch one of the most exciting Masters in years, I just slowly sipped on really bad wine. I am still trying to recover from missing out, but I think I will pull through..maybe.

I had a great time in our nation's capital and hope to return very soon...but only when the weather is a lot warmer.

Numerical Summary for the weekend:

62 - warmest temperature experienced this weekend. I had to bust out the warm clothes for this trip and they will be going right back into storage once I get back to Houston.

4 - pounds gained (estimated) this weekend eating insane portions...oh and the beverage consumption didn't help either. I was hoping that walking around town and at the wineries would help. Darn chili cheese fries!

2 - hours spent watching the Masters this weekend. A personal all-time low. Please forgive me golf gods.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11234618915123569.post-44875329698154382392011-04-05T08:54:00.005-05:002011-04-05T22:13:00.616-05:00Final Four Bonanza
For the past few weeks, the Lord has really blessed me with opportunities to experience things so few sports fans ever will. I went toe-to-toe with the PGA guys and the past few days, I worked courtside at the Final Four here in Houston. The announced attendance for the Championship game was just over 70,000. This included the general public and members of the media. Of that total attendance, about 3 dozen folks had court access. Yours truly was in that small group. It was nice being able to walk up on the court and guys like Jim Gray (NBC Sports), Andy Katz (ESPN), and Pat Forde (ESPN) were stuck looking from afar.

It didn't hit me what I was about to experience until I was walking up to Reliant Stadium Saturday afternoon around 2pm (3+ hours before tip-off). As I walked into the stadium, I found myself on the court. Hey, photo opportunity, right?
The first few hours were spent helping out the photographers, learning the ropes and then figuring out which locations we were going to work. My job was a photo runner. Most photographers were wired into an editors computer so every picture they took, immediately popped up on their editors' computer. Some still needed memory cards to be run at every timeout. I volunteered to work up in the stands the first game, but I got to run down on the court when I had to deliver the cards to the editing room. It was fun, but the running up and down the stands was getting old. I eventually moved to the court side spot for the second game between Kentucky and UConn.

I did manage to see the following athletes as I quickly scanned the crowd:
Warren Sapp (Former NFL)
Eric Gordon (Ex-UConn Husky, Now NBA)
Tubby Smith (Ex-Kentucky, Current Minnesota coach)
Charles Barkley (Duh)Tom Izzo (Michigan St. Head Coach)
Wally Szczerbiak (Former NBA, now CBS Analyst)
George Smith (ESPN Reporter)
Robert Wuhl (Actor, From Arli$$ on HBO)
Owen Daniels (Houston Texans Tight End)
Adrian Peterson (Vikings Running Back)
Hasheem Thabeet (Ex-UConn, Current NBA center...7'3")
Ashley Judd (Actress...however the photographer I was working with took pictures of her, didn't recognize/know her and then asked for her name to put in the paper. His man card was quickly revoked)

But my favorite athlete I ran into, and had a fun conversation with, was Matt Kuchar, PGA Tour member. Possibly the nicest, most down to earth guy I have ever met. He even asked what my role was for the media and he volunteered to run for me. I told him if he got me on at Augusta, he could take my spot.

So that was Saturday. Come Monday, Championship night, I was pumped. Security was ridiculous. Numerous times I was approached to show credentials, explain my duties and then they finally left me alone. Want to know where I stood for the game?
And while UConn was celebrating and most of the media had to wait off the court, where do you think I was at? Oh yeah, exploiting my court access:
I stood off the court during the actual game play but before the game, during timeouts and after the game, I was allowed on the court. Sure the game was boring, but it was still and electric atmosphere!

Numerical Summary for the Final Four:

16 - hours spent at Reliant stadium Saturday and Monday.

40 - percent of the allotted student tickets filled by UConn. It was a bad student turnout. Heck, even VCU and Butler far outnumbered the tradition-rich Huskies.

5 - years until Houston hosts the Final Four again. Don't worry, I have already started my campaign to be a runner when it returns!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11234618915123569.post-64656867382370860852011-04-02T10:11:00.003-05:002011-04-02T10:46:53.675-05:00Smash It Up!So instead of blogging about golf this go around, I figured I would reach out to my music lovers. I fly solo and live on my own so in my free time, I listen to a ton of music. There is something about finding new genres, new artist etc that helps grow my ever-expanding music library. A co-worker of mine is very well connected to the indie/electronic scene. She gave me a couple of links for me to pass along.

Oh, and these sites all have FREE (and legal to download) music.

Hood Internet
I fell in love with Hood early last year with their 'mashed' tracks. They take a couple of songs and mash them all together. For example, they take the lyrics from a rap song and mix it with the melody from an alternative rock track. Check out how they mixed Warren G's Regulators and Toro y Moi's latest.
The Hood Internet - Still Regulating (Warren G & Nate Dogg x Toro Y Moi) by hoodinternet

You can download their latest Mix here.
Also, check out the free mash up from Girl Talk here

RAC Remix
These remixes take the original songs but tweak them just enough to make them unique. RAC (Remix Artist Collective) has a website that allows you to listen to about 100 songs and about 90 are free to download. The CSS - Let's Make Love and Listen From Above is by far my favorite RAC remix.
RAC Portfolio by RAC

RCRD LBL
This website is Indie heavy but also feature some really great remixes. They update their site regularly with free songs to download. This site definitely is one of the best if you want to a diverse group of featured artists and genres. I spent a couple of hours on this site sampling and downloading once I heard about it.

MySpoonful
I love this site because it features artist that most of the general public have never heard. What I like about the site is they give you both the genres and who they most resemble in mainstream music. This is definietly a portal for the unknowns to get their music out to the fans.

Also, my co-worker told me about this site that features the top 10 sites for free music downloads. Some of the sites are in this post, others are not. Happy downloading!

Numerical Summary for the Week:

7- meals consumed this week that were of the Mexican cuisine. I always told myself I could never get tired of tortillas, meat, cheese, rice and beans...but I am pushing it!

8.5- hours expected to work at the Final Four today. I am to arrive at 2:30 and then probably be able to leave around 11. It will be a great experience, but I WILL be tired tomorrow. If you see a sun burned fellow in the media area, underneath the baskets, on TV (probably wearing a bright shirt)...that's me.

0- common sense used by yours truly at the pool yesterday. Sun? Check. Pale Skin? Check. Suntan lotion? What's that?!?! Lobster red on the chest and stomach? Check. Pale Back? Check. It's officially pool season!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11234618915123569.post-16129485717490272902011-03-28T16:32:00.003-05:002011-03-28T17:01:38.826-05:00What Just Happened
Let's see...

What best describes my round with the PGA guys this morning...

Well, that would imply that I got off the ground before I crashed and burned. Maybe something more like this:

Either way, you get the picture.

It was a great experience. I have never gone toe to toe with a PGA pro, don't know if I ever will again, but it is truly remarkable how good they are on the course. Michael Letzig is just so pure from 150 yards and in. His driving, heck, I don't think he missed a fairway. On one par 4, he stepped off a chip shot at 52 yards, wanting to land it right at 50 yards. His pitch mark where his ball landed was 2 inches from his target spot. The ball didn't spin as much but he still made his 4 footer for birdie. Oh, this was after his typical 330+ yard drive. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?! And to think he was fighting just to play in the Shell Houston Open.

I am now a fan of Letzig.

Numerical Summary for the Round:

0 - penalty shots incurred during the round. Don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

20 - feet from the pin after my tee shot on the 17th hole, a 321 yard par 4. Letzig, after seeing this great shot, offered me a thousand bucks to trade shots. I don't think he was kidding as he was right on the cut line shooting a 66. I whiffed the eagle putt but made birdie.

80 - dollars spent on my new Lululemon golf pants for the round. I may have finished near the bottom of the leaderboard, but by golly, I was going to look dang good! By the way, those Lulus were the BEST golf pant I have ever worn. Hands down.

80 + 1 - my score for the day. Humbling, embarassing, disappointing...you get it. However, I didn't quit and I turned in my score card. It's days like this where I need to just suck it up and take my medicine.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11234618915123569.post-56428419790672042212011-03-27T07:26:00.004-05:002011-03-27T08:03:57.121-05:00Monday QualifierJust a quick update for Monday...

I tee off at 7:45am. We will be the third group off which is a perfect position to be in. Go out when the weather isn't a factor, post a low score and then watch the others get beat up by the heat and wind. You can track the scores HERE.

My playing partners are Eric Axley and Michael Letzig, both are PGA Tour Veterans.

Mr. Axley is a fellow lefty and was the poster child for one of my favorite golf clothing lines, Sligo. He has since moved on to another clothing company (SubSeventy, I believe) but this is what he use to sport on the course:

Cool story about Mr. Letzig...2 years ago at the Shell Houston Open, I had media credentials so I was able to walk inside the ropes with the players. I was on the 18th tee box waiting for Mr. Letzig to hit when he stopped to clean his shoes. He looked at his caddy and said: 'You got to look good walking down the 18th fairway'. He then proceeded to hit it straight down the middle.

I think I'm at somewhat of an advantage for the round because there is no pressure for me to succeed. So what if I play bad. I am just going to go out there, hit as many greens as I can and pray the putter catches fire.

To summarize: I am 18 holes away from the PGA Tour.

Numerical Summary for the weekend:

50- minutes spent watching my nephew play tee-ball at the local YMCA. It was a league for a bunch of 3 and 4 year-olds. It was pretty funny watching the circus and the kids making up their own rules as they ran from 1st to 3rd to 2nd.

84- temperature for Houston yesterday. Why did I mention this? Oh, because I was in a suit. At an outdoor wedding. With no breeze. At 5pm. Can you say sweat box?!

41- songs downloaded from this website. It's a bunch of normal songs remixed just enough to make them sound different. There are 98 songs all together in which about 90 are free to download. I have been listening to the new mixes all weekend. Just a little something to change it up on the iPod.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11234618915123569.post-20008507868935342702011-03-25T12:47:00.003-05:002011-03-25T14:46:06.554-05:00Halfway to the Big ShowYesterday, I played in the Pre-Qualifier for the Shell Houston Open. Last year was my first year to play in it and I didn't know what to expect. This year, no excuses. I have been pouring my heart into my game by focusing on overcoming obstacles, staying in the present and playing to my abilities.

The Pre-Qualifier is filled with mini-tour golfers, really good amateurs, and a few people who have no business playing. The top 50 (out of about 145) make it to the Monday qualifier with the Nationwide and PGA Tour guys not yet qualified for the Shell.

Last year, I found myself on the bubble by shooting a disappointing 76. I was on the right side of the cut line until the final group of the day knocked me out of the Top 50 and I was absolutely devastated. With all the stuff on and off the golf course, it took some time to recover. Needless to say, I picked myself up and continued to give God thanks for the talent he has given me.

Thursday's tee time was one of the first of the day, which is what most golfers prefer. The two other guys in my group were a mini-tour veteran and an assistant pro out at Redstone Golf Club. Very nice guys so that helped with the nerves. Too bad they couldn't calm my swing on the first 5 holes. It was army golf: left, right, left, right. Finally, I got the nerves, mind and swing in check and started rolling in some much needed birdies. I signed my scorecard for a 75, my stomach churned, emotions were running high but I didn't want to see where I stood...back to being on the bubble. Not again. Please Lord, not again. After the morning groups finished, I was sitting at T-26th. Slowly the afternoon guys finished up and I started dropping in the standings. Tied for 30th...then 32nd...then 37th. At one point, there were 36 guys still yet to finish and I was tied for 39th place. Doing the math I prepared for another kick in the stomach. My dad was watching scores updated online so I shut off the computer and went to dinner. The appetite was gone and then the phone rang at about 7:30pm...it was my dad...just calling to say that I made it...right on the cut line.

The relief I felt really is indescribable. The emotional roller coaster was finally over. Time to celebrate and give thanks to God. I have struggled with letting go of certain things in my life and this was a prime example of me worrying instead of giving it the big guy.

In order for me to advance to the Shell Houston Open, I need to place in the top 4 out of another 145 guys. A score of about 10 strokes less than yesterday will be required. Sure it seems like a long shot, which it is, but I will have no expectations about it and just go in excited to play with the big boys I see on TV.

Numerical Summary for the week:

15- congratulatory emails/phone calls/texts I received from various co-workers today after hearing I made the cut. Really meant a lot to know so many people were following. I better not let the fan club down!!

80- high temperature yesterday during the qualifier. We were required to wear pants. My goodness summer is going to be a hot one.

2.5- hours spent on the course after work each of the last few nights. Oh how I love daylight savings time!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11234618915123569.post-37914473477367166252011-03-19T20:39:00.005-05:002011-03-20T14:16:17.412-05:00The Wilderness Golf Course...They Ain't Lyin!!Yesterday I took a mini road trip down to Lake Jackson, TX to play a course I really have grown to enjoy. If you are in the Houston area, it is well worth the 45 minute drive south on Highway 288. The Wilderness is another one of those outlying courses that totally removes you from the city life and just relieves any and all stress. The course is surrounded by a bird sanctuary and a bayou...I can only imagine how humid the course can get in the summer time.

The green fees are reasonable at $53 for weekend rates including cart (just mention online coupon). The course doesn't get a whole lot of play being in a small town so the course conditions, primarily the greens, have never disappointed this picky golfer. The fairways were coming back from their dormant state but still had great coverage. The layout of the course is pretty simple, but they make it difficult with an ample amount of trees, bunkers and water hazards.

Enough of the technical aspects, let's get on with the stories!!

The area is known for the outdoors...camping, fishing and hunting. Just so the golfers felt right at home, the carts were designed in camouflage.

I have no problem playing as a single and getting paired up with locals. Usually I get paired up with senior citizens or middle aged men. Today, however, I was paired up with two high school kids. They attended a private school there in Lake Jackson. As they struggled most of the round (but managed to hit the occasional good shot), I started to think of who they vaguely resemble. On the 13th hole, it hit me...I was playing with Chunk from The Goonies and the kid from Up!

As I mentioned earlier, the course is surrounded by a bird sanctuary. They are very adamant about golfers staying out. I get it, don't mess with the abnormally large black birds. However, as I went to 'relieve' myself on the course, I noticed this sign and quickly decided I no longer had the need to 'go'.Yea, that is an electrical fence around the course. I can only imagine how many inebriated male golfers have ignored that sign when draining the bladder. I even asked the kids I was paired with how much money it would take for them to touch the fence. They didn't bite. Oh well.

When I get tired of the same courses, I find it a nice change of pace when I fill up the gas tank and drive to the outskirts of civilization.

Numerical Summary for the Weekend:

14- hours of basketball watched since Thursday. I know that is probably a bit low as compared to previous years, but when your team isn't in the dance, you lose interest in a hurry.

8- number of organic fruit snacks I have consumed in my weekend of house sitting for my sister. They were from East Texas and I had met them at a wedding back in November. I didn't have the faintest of ideas as to what they had in mind...I was just told to answer the phone once they called.

Friday morning was spent on the golf course enjoying a free round at the Tournament course at The Woodlands Country Club (thanks Eric for the hook-up). The weather was absolutely perfect...so good that the guys I played with wanted to walk and carry. I hadn't hoofed it on a course in I don't know how long. If I do walk, I usually rent a push cart because there has been research done that even with a double strap bag, it still compresses the spine which is not good for the back. Needless to say, I was whipped after the round but knew I had a long night ahead of me.

Fast forward to 6pm and my sister called me to go eat an early dinner. Hey, I am always down for dinner...especially if I get to see family and the tab is picked up by the brother in law. We finished dinner around 7 so I went home to wait for instructions from the out-of-towners. I waited...and waited...and waited. Finally around 10pm, I got the first phone call which apparently was just to touch base (I think they called to see if I was still awake). The clock struck 11pm, the phone rang and I was out the door with a redbull in hand.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy going out just as much as the next person, but to start so late was something new to me. Oh, and the area of town I was to drive myself to was not my favorite: Washington St. It's the new up and coming area for Houston twenty somethings. I hadn't spent too much time on Washington because it just isn't my scene (more of an Upper Kirby, Midtown kind of guy) but I figured I would suck it up and just prepare myself for anything. I park in some random lot, pay the attendant $10 and little did I know, that would be the last time I would have my hearing.

I walked into Ei8ght and immediately was blown away by how many people had the same idea as these East Texans. The place was packed, the music was actually pretty decent and I was glad I picked up some cash at the ATM because the bar was uber-crowded. As I made my way to the back, I started making mental notes of the characters I encountered:

The Pack of Creepers. Usually a pack of 3-5 outcast males, probably employees of the Apple store and guaranteed to have an account with World of Warcraft. Sure, one of the guys probably heard of this place from his younger hip sister so this was their night on the town.

The Clothes Optional Girls. Do I really need to explain? Are you wearing lingerie or actual clothes? You know, my wandering eyes appreciate your choice of attire for the evening, but your attracting the wrong kind of attention.

**No Picture or Video here...This is a PG-13 blog**

The Cookie Cutter Guys. Jeans...check. Starched button up dress shirt with tiny animal embroidered on left chest...check. Boots/loafers...check. Metal alloy watch...check. College ring...check. Way to be original guys.

Jersey Shore Rejects. I do like the fake tan in early March. Your dance moves are a mix of fist pumping, full body convulsions and when all else fails, thrust the pelvic region as wildly as possible. I don't know where you bought your shirt, but it looks like you got ripped off because it looks a tad small and there is a huge ink spot that vaguely resembles an eagle or old English letters.

Bar Squatters. These people are ALWAYS at the bar and might as well set up camp. If you are a guy, you are making sure you know just about every girl has to walk your way. If you are a girl, you are a cheap skate and hoping some guy buys you a drink. Yea, I am on to you and your scheme.

I do enjoy people watching every time I go out on the town. With all of the diversity here in Houston, you are guaranteed to find some interesting characters. Every time I am out on the town, I always try to find a good story to share with friends and co-workers.

Numerical Summary

6 - days until my big qualifier I play in every year. It's always a long shot, but I do enjoy playing with some incredibly talented amateurs/pros.

4 - hours of sleep I managed to get last night. That, coupled with the NCAA tournament makes it very difficult to do much.

48 - dollars it cost to fill up my brother-in-law's mini cooper. You would think a car the size of a big mac box would have a small tank...not so much. And when premium is at $3.65, it doesn't take much to deplete the wallet. I am taking car of the car, house and dog (not in that order) this weekend while they go skiing.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11234618915123569.post-15066018761578850182011-03-07T09:41:00.006-06:002011-03-07T22:37:51.505-06:00You Can't be Serious...This past weekend, I took the habitual drive back to Waco. The tasks at hand: Golf, ESPN GameDay and to see the new nephew. However, I was to meet my parents Friday afternoon at a golf course about 30 minutes southeast of Waco. I have heard of the course via my dad as he uses it for the young kids in his junior golf tournament. Expectations for the course were...well, non-existent as I was just happy to be out on the links. What greeted me as I pulled into the gravel parking lot will make for some great stories. Where to begin...

First off...where was I to park? It was all gravel, a few barriers here or there but I didn't know if I was parking in a drive way or an actual spot. Getting out of the car you don't hear any man-made noises; just the occasional cow letting us know he is fat and happy. You can see just about every hole on the 9-hole course. At the west end of the parking lot were tin sheds where the members kept their personal golf carts. After seeing some of the members' carts, I quickly realized it wasn't the color of the cart or seat covers that determined coolness, it was how many golf balls you could stash in your cart.

Walking into the pro shop/clubhouse/bar/restaurant/video poker/smoking/locker room, I knew I was in for a treat. We were greeted by Jackie, the do-it-all employee of this country club. She informed us that they do not accept credit cards but since we were guests, we could just mail her a check for the green fee. Never in this day in age would I have expected that. She gave us a coupon for 6 free beers, 2 golf cart keys and we were off.

Looks like my cart was sponsored by Coors Light

Apparently there was a driving range at the course but I never saw it. The greens were the size of a small bed room...but domed shape so the actual flat putting surface was equivalent to a king size bed. Stepping up on the first tee after sitting in the car for 2.5 hours didn't help the swing. Nonetheless, I found the fairway (or what looked like a fairway) and managed to par the first hole. I would hope so being a 305 yard par 4 with no trouble. Heck, there were only about 4 bunkers on the entire course.

On the second hole, I noticed something interesting. A cow pasture lined the right side of the fairway while the lake hugged the left side. If you hit your ball in the water, you were screwed, however if you managed to go right you could still retrieve your ball over the barb-wire fence thanks to these nifty....whatever they are.

As we putted out on the 4th hole, I looked back at #2 fairway and there must have been 6 or 7 golf carts coming over the hill all spread out like locust. Judging by the time of the day on Friday, I figured it was the members just getting off work and starting their weekend with a quick 9 holes.

Number 6/15 was a par 5 into the prevailing south wind but on the back tees was a concrete gorilla. This course, in the middle of nowhere, had a gorilla on their golf course?!?! Uh, hello photo opt!!

Here is the country club logo...but don't let the marlin fish sway you. This course was in the middle of Texas. Miles and miles away from any sort of big game fish (other than giant carp or bass in their lake)

Here is the closing hole: a daunting par 3 over the lake. It's all of about 115 yards from the 9th tee box and 135 from the 18th tee box. My birdie putts both missed just short but I will blame it on the dormant greens and the occasional bare spots.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed my time at Marlin Country Club and quality time with my parents. I hope there are some of you out there that have played this course as well and can share in the great stories.

Numerical Summary for the weekend:
34 - wind speed in mph on Saturday. It's a Crazy Wing (chicken, cheese, jalapeno wrapped in bacon and deep fried) in a roll with ranch. My area is the Permian Region in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. My days are filled with looking over capital expenses for drilling projects, putting out small fires in our accounting system, communicating with the Region and verifying my sanity on an hourly basis. In other words, I am strictly overhead to the company. Not a lot of perks are thrown my way versus the engineers that get exhausted from all of the free stuff vendors supply to them. However, I might have one-upped the entire engineering department. My ex-boss (still with my company, just different assignment) is married to a photographer for the Houston newspaper. I won't name names, but he is a talented guy. His forte is sports dealing with Houston teams (Texans, Astros, etc).

It had been years since I had been to a professional football game and growing up a Cowboys fan, I never had a desire to pay to see the sub .500 Texans. Well, I asked...more like pestered the photog leading up to Texans/Cowboys regular season game. The ticket for the general public was sold out so my only way to see the game would be securing media credentials. Score, he asked if I wanted to be his runner for the game. What is a runner? Well, I was to assist the photog with his three cameras and then collect media cards at the end of each quarter and download them onto a computer. There was another photog on the other side of the field I needed to collect her card as well. Turns out you run an insane distance circling that field about 10 times.

I spent the first quarter just in awe of the sights and sounds of the game. The players are just unbelievably huge and the cheerleaders are well...not as hot as you might think. The cameras are crazy heavy with the zoom lenses and mono-pods.

I even managed to get on TV during this play: (I make an appearance at the 0:29 mark)

My head was on a swivel all game but as I crossed behind the Cowboys' bench towards the end of the game, I took this photo. Just something to note, I walked by the bench numerous times during the game, but rarely was the conversation amongst teammates about football. Most of the topics (especially for the special teams guys) was about the cheerleaders or certain fans in the stands.

I also managed to score the same gig for the Texans/Titans game in which Andre Johnson got ejected for fighting as well as the Monday night game against the Ravens. I got to walk the field before the game and see all of the ESPN crew doing their thing. Towards the end of the game, Steve Young was just chilling...in my spot! Just because I wear a terrible red vest and couldn't operate one of the cameras to save my life doesn't mean you can just squat in my view!

It was fun while it lasted but my hard work and serious butt kissing has paid off for the best media pass yet...The 2011 Final Four here in Houston. The NCAA emailed me confirmation about my pass a few days ago. I will access to the court but I don't know where I will be 'running'. Look for me to rush the court at the end of the championship game. I figured I can work on my wind sprints so that I can be the first on the court for the confetti and festivities!!

Numerical Summary for the day:

74 - temperature here in Houston today. When an aggie co-worker bet me that her team would beat Baylor this season in basketball, I couldn't resist. Granted at the time the bet was placed, the Baylor anticipation for the season was sky high with all the athleticism. We shook hands and the winner got to decorate the losers office any way they see fit. As the season progressed and Baylor managed to lose more and more games, I got real nervous.

At my place of business, I am known for pranks pulled on any and all people. Like the time we taped 250 styrofoam cups to the ceiling in my manager's office or toilet papered an office because a co-worker thought we wouldn't know he snuck out to watch the World Cup. Sure I would like to be known as the guy who solved any and all problems, but I will take what I can get this early in my career.

Back to the story at hand...Baylor swept the series and it was game on. I sent a simple text: Good game, your office is toast. I didn't get a response. On Sunday, I ran over to Michael's to clean out any and all green and gold decorations. Thank goodness Mardi Gras is going on because there was an insane amount of options.

The alarm buzzed at 5:45am this morning and my bags were packed with 8 bags of Easter grass, 230 yards of paper streamers, 1000 yards of ribbon and 3 rolls of tape.

On my way to work, I found out that she was moving from her current office to one on my floor as she was changing positions. A creepy evil laugh filled my car as I read that information on my phone.

Here is what the office looked like before:She hadn't had time to get her computer and personal items unpacked so it looks a little vacant.

And here is what it looked like after about an hour of intense Martha Stewart craft time:

It brings a tear to my eye every time I take a look at my work. That Easter grass is a real pain to clean up as my couch is still covered in it from separating the lumps the night before. I drove by the office this evening and with the light on, you can see the BAYLOR spelled out on the window...but it reads ROLYAB. Needless to say, her reaction was priceless. I could only shrug my shoulders and say: wow, I would hate to clean this up.

More posts to come...

Funny video of the day:

Numerical Summary for the past few days/weeks/months:

4 - rounds of golf played last week. I actually had to pass on the driving range Friday after work which very rarely happens. There is no such thing as too much golf, but I stuffed myself and needed a nap.

9 - people in the movie theater when I watched Hall Pass Friday afternoon. I should have known then that the movie probably wasn't going to be all that great. Not a movie critic by any means, but that movie fell short of my expectations.

31 - songs downloaded in the last 5 days. I finally got fed up with my stagnant music library and downloaded some real dandies. Oh, but still holding strong of no country.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1
