Best Drivers of 2011

Alright, let's get back to the main reason I started this blog...golf!

This spring at the Shell Houston Open qualifier, the PGA guys were using equipment I had never seen before. As an amateur, I consider myself to be on the long end of the distance spectrum throughout the bag. My drives are consistently around the 290 - 300 yard mark while hitting around 50% of fairways. Compared to the pros, I couldn't muster the strength to match their distance. Most of the pros had been measured over and over to find the right club head and shaft combo. The ease at which they swing and the distance they produced got me thinking about my current setup and how it might be completely wrong for me.

As a lefty, demo clubs are about as rare as a hurricane in Iowa. So instead of purchasing a bunch of custom ordered drivers and hoping one would work out, I traveled all over the Houston area to demo days. I found that 4 drivers are really worth taking a look at if you are a more skilled golfer.

Background: If there was a shaft upgrade available, I would choose that club. Otherwise, I was stuck with stock shafts for the demo. Titleist, Cobra and TaylorMade offer interchangeable shafts so they had an unfair advantage over the Callaway.

Specs: Avg swing speed - 116mph. Optimal Launch Angle - 10*. Optimal Spin Rate - 2700rpm. Avg Angle of Attack: -0.7*. Avg Smash Factor - 1.44

Cobra S3

Probably the most forgiving driver I have ever hit. Also, probably one of the worst stock shafts I have ever hit (Fujikura Blur). It was a little difficult to hit a consistently straight drive but man were they long. Cobra's elliptical face design really is cool because it applies to just about every golfer. Where are most of your mishits? High on the toe, low on the heel. Kudos to Cobra for the most realistic driver head on the market...just a shame that if you want a shaft to fit your game, you will need to pony up another $200 on top of the $300 price tag. Plus I love the name of the driver: S3...that's my initials. I should buy one solely for the label!
Final Grade: B- (Only because of the subpar shaft)



Callaway Razr Hawk Tour

Sweet Mary and Moses this is by far the longest, hottest driver on the market. Into the wind, this driver was about 15 yards further than any of the competition. Normal wind conditions, the Cally was tied with Titleist. Their stock shaft, the Aldila RIP, is a great shaft for most golfers...but not for me. I needed something to launch lower with a lot less spin. This is quite a step up from the FT-9 Tour. It is the only one of the 4 that features a fixed head unlike the other 3 adjustable heads.
Final Grade: A



Titleist 910 D3

Most of the time I skip over Titleist. Why? Because they have always been to hard for me to hit and they were the most unforgiving club in the shop. The last Titleist driver I owned was the 905R and it was a rocket...if you could find the sweet spot the size of a gnat's ass. This club completely changed my opinion about their forgiveness. This club actually HAS some forgiveness. I first hit the Diamana 'Ahina (the updated WhiteBoard) and thought I had fallen in love...that is until I put in the Oban Devotion shaft (a $150 upcharge) and this had a hard time not going in my bag. The adjustability of the club is nice and it is just enough to tinker but not overwhelm you.
Final Grade: A (would have given A+ but the price is a little steep)



TaylorMade R11

The tinker toy of the golf world. Yes, they are on TV more than we can count. Yes, out of the 9,756 options, 1 is bound to work for each golfer. However, the white driver is too bright for me in the Houston summer sun and the spin on this driver was way too high for me. I don't ground my club so the face angle adjustability doesn't come into effect. I tried the heaviest, stiffest shaft available and it still couldn't bring the spin rate down. For people with slower swings, you need spin to keep the ball airborne; however too much spin causes the ball to balloon and reduces roll.
Final Grade: B+


If you are in the market for a driver, please go get fitted. Do NOT buy right off the rack. There is so much technology out there that can find you the right combination. Sure, we would all like to blame the club instead of our swing, but if your driver is older than 3 or 4 years, you will benefit from the latest and greatest out there.

1 - rounds of golf played in the last 4 weekends. Yes, I have been going through the typical withdrawal symptoms: shakes, nervous twitch, cold sweats and spontaneous golf swings in the office.

0 - number of good shows on this summer. Living on reruns is getting old and no I can't dance, she shouldn't date that guy and I am sure someone has a great voice.

25 - mpg average in the Shelby on my trek from Houston to New Braunfels, up to Waco and then back to Houston. Who says 320 hp V-8 engines aren't fuel efficient!?!

Yes, this is a golf blog but all I have done lately is discuss music. Well, my next post I will talk about the golf club testing I have done but there is a new group out I am trying to spread the word about.

For the Holiday Weekend

Houston's forecast for the Holiday weekend: Partly Cloudy, Breezy, High in the low 90s.

What is loaded in the car for my friend Craig's Lake Party: Swimsuit, sound cube of death, ipod, SPF 100, tooth brush and some flip flops.

Summer is definitely here.

Here are some of my 'Best Of' for the summer.

Best Margarita Ever...Period. It's easy to make and probably one of the healthiest margaritas you will ever drink because it is just alcohol and fruit juice. The orange helps reduce the acid bite that most margaritas carry.
1 oz Patron Silver
1 oz Patron Orange
1 oz Triple Sec
Squeeze/Juice of 2 limes and 1 med orange (best to microwave the fruit for 20 seconds to get more juice out)
Mix well with lots of ice (no salt or sugar on the rim).

Best Steak (that I have ever made)
Choice cut of meat
Brine for an hour prior to grilling
Heat grill as hot as it can get
Season steak accordingly (I like to use a little brown sugar, salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika)
Sear the steak for 2-3 minutes on each side
Finish steak by heating oven to 400* and baking for about 7-10 minutes.
Serve with a little butter.
Note: If you have a really thick piece of meat, you will get the middle cooked faster (more evenly) if you put a few nails in the steak. The metal acts as a conductor of heat and it is perfect for those who don't like rare steaks.

Best Suntan Lotion for intense summer parties

This sweat and water proof 'spray-on' lotion is simply magic. I spray it on at the beginning of the sun exposure and it lasts all day long. No need to reapply. Heck, I have to scrub in the shower pretty good just to get it off. I think it absorbs into the blood stream!!

Best Shoes for the Summer

Old man slippers?! No sir. These are Reef's Slip On Shoes and they are just as comfortable as sandals. They have their uber soft insole and I wear these all the time. Another pair I own is made by Sanuk. Being a golfer, I have an unsightly sock tan line and these shoes help people from noticing the stark contrast of my normal skin tone and my tan legs. Plus, getting older = ugly toes.

Best Summer Beers

Blue Moon is always a safe bet. Blonde Bombshell is perfect for pool side. Dos XX is like a good dog, always there to greet you when you get home, never leaves your side, and always has a smile on its face.

Numerical Summary for the week:

4 - AM...which the time I woke up this morning. The power went out in my apartment and all the clocks were flashing 12:00. I have black out shades so I didn't know what time it was. Once I found my phone, I was already awake. Still didn't make it to work until 8ish.

1 - year away from Facebook. I decided to reactivate my account...but I am already starting to regret it. So many incriminating photos out there.

15 - estimated crowd size for the lake party. I know the house can sleep a bunch of people but since I will be the 15th wheel, I have a feeling I will be sleeping in a closet. That may sound bad to some of you, but if you knew my vacation sleeping arrangements growing up...a closet is an upgrade!!

More Music...Less Silence

If you know me or my lifestyle, you know there is always music playing. I live alone so the silence is usually filled with either Slacker or Pandora online radio. The last time I posted about music, it was more about websites, etc. This post is about what I am actually listening to these days. Judge my music all you want, make recommendations, it's all good.

First off I have to mention the best portable sounds system...ever. Sure you have seen the portable speakers for your ipod that maybe pumps some high treble but no bass. This 'sound cube of death' is well worth the sticker price (and extra $100 battery so you can use it off a/c power) and provides ample amounts of all-around great sound.
This is the Bosch Power Box Job Site Radio. The cage around the unit allows it to be dropped from a height of 7' and still operate without a hitch (I haven't tried it yet, nor do I plan on it anytime soon). It comes with a remote that is handy when you are too lazy to turn it up. It can operate in all environments; Bosch recommends just not submerging it in water...duh. It's perfect at the pool, beach, tailgate, etc. It is truly incredible with all the ports to hook up an iPod, a satellite radio dock, flash card, sim card, and cigarette lighter port. If the unit is plugged into a power source, then there are 4 a/c outlets so you can charge your phone, etc.
It has a nice subwoofer as well on the bottom of the cube so you get some nice bass.

Numerical Summary for the Weekend:

60 - hours between showers this weekend. I had every intention to maintain personal hygiene but a trip to the beach and the pool delayed usage of soap and shampoo. Oh I was a sweet smelling dude this afternoon.

15 - pars made on the Cypress course at Cypresswood Golf Club here in Houston. I played with a buddy who just finished his 2nd year at law school. It was a pitch and putt style course but I enjoyed using a sick day!

5 - ingredients used for THE BEST MARGARITA...EVER! You mix a shot of Patron, a shot of Patron Orange, a shot of Triple Sec, the juice of 1 med orange and 2 limes...mix with lots of ice (no salt or sugar on the rim). They are soooo smooth and they hit you like a runaway truck! Perfect while in Galveston or poolside.

It's been a life-long dream to own a car made by Carroll Shelby. Ever since I was interested in muscle cars, I have always wanted a '67 Shelby A/C Cobra:

Well, I can't afford a REAL Shelby A/C and I wasn't about to drop $40K on a kit version of the car.

My Honda has been hit with the injury bug as of late and I was pouring an insane amount of money in the old girl. I ran the numbers and realized I was spending more on repairs than a monthly car payment. Sure, I wouldn't continue the streak of major repairs because soon enough I would have replaced just about everything on that heap!

My childhood friend works in the used car lot of a Chevy dealership in McGregor, TX (just outside of Waco). Two weeks ago, when I was busy replacing yet another transmission on the Accord, he calls me and says there is a 2007 Mustang Shelby GT (#1694 out of 6000 made) on his lot with low miles. So when I traveled to Waco for a charity golf tournament I stopped by the dealership.

This is it in my parking garage.


I am in my mid-life crisis stage already...at the ripe age of 30. I will inform everyone once the memory fades, the grey hair encroaches, the wrinkles appear and I start eating a vast majority of soft foods. Until then...I am supporting the industry I work in by using as much gas as possible!!

Numerical Summary for the Weekend:

12 - people I entertained down at the Morby beach house this past weekend. I was expecting anywhere from 4 to 24 so that was a perfect sized group. Smoked meats, cold beer, plenty of sunshine and a stunningly clean Galveston beach.

14 - lbs of picnic roast I smoked for 9 hours while we partied. Usually we are all so tired from the day, anything tastes good and the food didn't disappoint this year.

24 - inch red fish caught by my friend Matt Thursday night. We fished until about 2 am and the biggest one was the last one we caught. We were either going to run out of lures or beer by the end of the night. Turns out we ran out of energy.

Here Fishy Fishy Fishy!

So my cousin, Carter, is probably the most avid and skilled outdoors man I know. Whether it is hunting or fishing, the guy is always outdoors. About 2 or 3 years ago, he invited me down to Galveston to go night fishing. A lot of the homes in the Morby Beach house neighborhood have submerged lights in the canal which you can see the fish circling the lights going after bait fish. One of the 'mother nature' triggers to go fish is a sudden drop in temperature, aka a good cold front, which the Houston area received Monday night, Tuesday morning.

Tuesday after work, I gathered my fishing gear, grabbed some soft bait lures (Berkley Gulp! Saltwater Pogy 3" Glow) at Academy, threw some ice in a cooler and headed an hour south to the beach house. I arrived around 9:15pm, located a underwater light with plenty of fish and my first line in was at 9:20pm. My first fish was on at about 9:23pm...however I was so excited about fishing that I forgot to grab a net and the first fish I caught, snapped my line as I attempted to bring the fish to the surface. Disgusted with myself, I went and found the sturdiest net I could find and retooled the fishing rod.

Most of the time spent fishing is actually driving around to find the lights. You can catch 1 fish per light before they all scatter and you have to move along. However, one house had 4 lights in a row. It was a new house right on the bay and there must have been 3 to 4 dozen red fish in the lights. Because it was such a large area, I was able to catch one on the right side of the lighted area and then immediately hook another one over in the left zone.

I fished until around midnight, catching 9 fish (8 red fish, 1 speckled trout) in about 45 minutes of actual fishing time. How big were these fish? The smallest I caught was a 17" red and the largest was a 24" red. I only kept 3 fish (2 reds and the 1 speck). Want to see what they looked like?


It was a really fun trip...until I had to clean my catch. I had seen Carter fileted many fish but never had done it myself. Let's just say the dock where I cleaned the fish looked like a murder scene after I was done. I didn't eat any of the fish myself, but gave it out to friends and family. Apparently its good eats! I finally made it back home around 2am Wednesday and let's just say I wasn't very productive that day at the office.

36 - holes of golf played this weekend. Played in the Waco Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament Friday morning and then just finished playing another round at Deerwood Country Club up in Kingwood.

352 - yards my drive went to win a long drive hole in the Chamber Tournament. I won a $50 gift card to Academy for my efforts. Hey! More fishing lures!!

100 - SPF I use if I am going to be outdoors. It's perfect for the course because 1 application is all you need. I do tone it down and go with SPF 70 for my face. Getting old = wrinkles and sun spots.

Docu-drama

As I near the end of my twenties (I have about 14 hours to be immature), I have tried to prepare myself for life in the thirties. Supposedly I am told to act my age, not get crazy at pool/beach parties, be able to hold conversations about wine, politics, economics and the arts, and cut out all the slang in my vocabulary. Yea, whatever.

One of the ways I have been saving money is that I watch TV the old fashioned way...via antenna. I don't have cable (which apparently is the WORSE thing in life because all of my friends introduce me as: hey, this is Shane...he doesn't have cable!!). My channel selection is limited to the basics but I can view most shows online via my laptop hooked up to the TV. I think the best channel ever in the Houston region is channel 55.2...the Vietnamese channel. Sure you can't understand it, but it challenges you to come up with your own story line. The Vietnamese music videos are just incredible. Yea, let me blow your mind about those mature talks concerning the arts when I bring Vietnam Idol into the convo!

I am not much of a movie guy but just recently I joined Netflix. They had a free month trial membership so I figured it couldn't hurt. The movies available for viewing online are a little limited but I have been discovering some really cool documentaries.


Food, Inc. - This goes into the food industry and discovers how the government and big business have monopolized the industry. It was shocking to see how the gov't is pushing corn and now a corn bi-product is in about 85% of all of our foods. It really did promote organic, locally grown foods. Of course I watched it while eating my processed dinner and decided I better shop at Whole Foods from here on out.


Restrepo - The creators follow a platoon in the deadliest valley in Afghanistan. The guys look so young and are immediately thrown into fire fights with the Taliban. They struggle when one of their friends is killed but find ways to make it through their 15 month deployment. I know the Iraq war got most of the attention during the Bush administration, but Afghanistan looks to be the most intense.


The Devil Came on Horseback - Darfur. I never really understood the magnitude of the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan...or why stars like George Clooney were so vocal about this area. An ex-marine was sent to monitor a cease-fire going on in Sudan and then started hearing reports about the mass killings in Darfur. The Sudanese gov't is basically using Arab rebels to wipe out the villagers in Sudan. All the villagers want is economic growth, a voice in the government, etc. If you can sit there, watch the movie, and not feel motivated to help then you might be a robot.

If you ever find yourself wanting a change of pace in your movie picks, look up some documentaries. Yes, they sound really boring, but I like them better than tween comedies or movies created by 5 year-olds (Fast and Furious series).


Nummerical Summary for the Week:

20 - average wind speed here in Houston over the past month. Absolutely kills your mental state on the golf course when it seems like every hole is into a strong head wind.

4 - wine bottles purchased at the grocery. That is 4 more than my all-time high. I will see what this grape drink is all about before making my final decision.

100 - SPF I use out at the pool just in case I manage to fall asleep in the sun. Sure you have to give it a good scrub in the shower to wash it off and sure it seeps into your blood stream once you apply it...but by golly, that stuff works!

30 - years on this here earth. God has given me quite a roller coaster but I have no regrets. I am a better person than where I was a month, a year, a decade ago.

Capitol Hill

I've never made it to our nation's capital. Having access to PBS, I get all the sight seeing I want from the comfort of my own couch! However, a good family friend has lived in DC for the past 7 years and she turned 30 this weekend. She sent me an invite a few months ago and I figured this was my chance to go. Free flight (using miles), free lodging (staying on the birthday girl's couch) and free transportation, heck even my frugal grandpa couldn't pass up this opportunity.

When I left Houston on Friday, it was 83*, sunny and my friends were headed to the pool. Upon my arrival to DC, it was rainy, 48* and just nasty.
The city was crazy with the potential government shutdown. I was even shuttled to capitol hill (the house side) because my friend was about to be put on furlough and had emergency meetings all afternoon...as you all know, congress reached a temporary agreement so the stress was quickly relieved.

As I waited in an office while the meetings were proceeding, I found my favorite beer in a fridge: Yuengling. This stuff is absolutely incredible but only sold on the east coast. When my friends take trips to the east coast, I pay them a premium to bring back Yuengling Lager. Oh, I definitely had 2 beers in the congressional building. How many of you can say that?!My friend lives just northeast of the Capitol building in a very cool, very old neighborhood. Most of the homes were built in the late 1800's/early 1900's. The neighborhood had lots of small parks for the insane dog population. Just about everyone I saw walking around had a dog on a leash.
So Friday night was a small dinner with the birthday girl, her mom and her mom's friends from Tyler. We went to Rosa Mexicano and had some really outstanding food. I went in with a snobby Texas attitude thinking that they wouldn't compare to the food in Houston. Well, I was humbled right off the bat. If you ever find yourself in DC and want some great Mexican food, I say Rosa's without a doubt. I ordered the Pork Chamorro (similar to carnitas)...which they should have labeled the leg of a T-Rex.After dinner, we ventured to a few bars with all of her friends. Most were cool people but I never met a single person that was born in DC. All were imported from around the country. At around 2:30, we decided to call it a night, but not before stopping at a local food landmark: Ben's Chili Bowl. At 3am, I scarfed down a chili dog and chili cheese fries. Absolutely incredible food. The line was out the door.
So Saturday was spend digesting the late night snack and walking around the Georgetown area. We finally found some time to relax and watch the Masters. That night was spent at a family style Italian restaurant and grabbing drinks at a really good tequila bar...my favorite kind of establishment!

So it's Masters Sunday...the absolute pinnacle golf day every year. And where am I? On a bus...heading through Virginia...to a couple of wineries...for the ENTIRE DAY! It was brutal but once I came to the realization that I wouldn't watch one of the most exciting Masters in years, I just slowly sipped on really bad wine. I am still trying to recover from missing out, but I think I will pull through..maybe.

I had a great time in our nation's capital and hope to return very soon...but only when the weather is a lot warmer.

62 - warmest temperature experienced this weekend. I had to bust out the warm clothes for this trip and they will be going right back into storage once I get back to Houston.

4 - pounds gained (estimated) this weekend eating insane portions...oh and the beverage consumption didn't help either. I was hoping that walking around town and at the wineries would help. Darn chili cheese fries!

2 - hours spent watching the Masters this weekend. A personal all-time low. Please forgive me golf gods.

Final Four Bonanza

For the past few weeks, the Lord has really blessed me with opportunities to experience things so few sports fans ever will. I went toe-to-toe with the PGA guys and the past few days, I worked courtside at the Final Four here in Houston. The announced attendance for the Championship game was just over 70,000. This included the general public and members of the media. Of that total attendance, about 3 dozen folks had court access. Yours truly was in that small group. It was nice being able to walk up on the court and guys like Jim Gray (NBC Sports), Andy Katz (ESPN), and Pat Forde (ESPN) were stuck looking from afar.

It didn't hit me what I was about to experience until I was walking up to Reliant Stadium Saturday afternoon around 2pm (3+ hours before tip-off). As I walked into the stadium, I found myself on the court. Hey, photo opportunity, right?
The first few hours were spent helping out the photographers, learning the ropes and then figuring out which locations we were going to work. My job was a photo runner. Most photographers were wired into an editors computer so every picture they took, immediately popped up on their editors' computer. Some still needed memory cards to be run at every timeout. I volunteered to work up in the stands the first game, but I got to run down on the court when I had to deliver the cards to the editing room. It was fun, but the running up and down the stands was getting old. I eventually moved to the court side spot for the second game between Kentucky and UConn.

I did manage to see the following athletes as I quickly scanned the crowd:

Ashley Judd (Actress...however the photographer I was working with took pictures of her, didn't recognize/know her and then asked for her name to put in the paper. His man card was quickly revoked)

But my favorite athlete I ran into, and had a fun conversation with, was Matt Kuchar, PGA Tour member. Possibly the nicest, most down to earth guy I have ever met. He even asked what my role was for the media and he volunteered to run for me. I told him if he got me on at Augusta, he could take my spot.

So that was Saturday. Come Monday, Championship night, I was pumped. Security was ridiculous. Numerous times I was approached to show credentials, explain my duties and then they finally left me alone. Want to know where I stood for the game?
And while UConn was celebrating and most of the media had to wait off the court, where do you think I was at? Oh yeah, exploiting my court access:
I stood off the court during the actual game play but before the game, during timeouts and after the game, I was allowed on the court. Sure the game was boring, but it was still and electric atmosphere!


Numerical Summary for the Final Four:

16 - hours spent at Reliant stadium Saturday and Monday.

40 - percent of the allotted student tickets filled by UConn. It was a bad student turnout. Heck, even VCU and Butler far outnumbered the tradition-rich Huskies.

5 - years until Houston hosts the Final Four again. Don't worry, I have already started my campaign to be a runner when it returns!

So instead of blogging about golf this go around, I figured I would reach out to my music lovers. I fly solo and live on my own so in my free time, I listen to a ton of music. There is something about finding new genres, new artist etc that helps grow my ever-expanding music library. A co-worker of mine is very well connected to the indie/electronic scene. She gave me a couple of links for me to pass along.

Oh, and these sites all have FREE (and legal to download) music.


Hood Internet
I fell in love with Hood early last year with their 'mashed' tracks. They take a couple of songs and mash them all together. For example, they take the lyrics from a rap song and mix it with the melody from an alternative rock track. Check out how they mixed Warren G's Regulators and Toro y Moi's latest.

RAC Remix
These remixes take the original songs but tweak them just enough to make them unique. RAC (Remix Artist Collective) has a website that allows you to listen to about 100 songs and about 90 are free to download. The CSS - Let's Make Love and Listen From Above is by far my favorite RAC remix.

RCRD LBL
This website is Indie heavy but also feature some really great remixes. They update their site regularly with free songs to download. This site definitely is one of the best if you want to a diverse group of featured artists and genres. I spent a couple of hours on this site sampling and downloading once I heard about it.


MySpoonful
I love this site because it features artist that most of the general public have never heard. What I like about the site is they give you both the genres and who they most resemble in mainstream music. This is definietly a portal for the unknowns to get their music out to the fans.

Numerical Summary for the Week:

7- meals consumed this week that were of the Mexican cuisine. I always told myself I could never get tired of tortillas, meat, cheese, rice and beans...but I am pushing it!

8.5- hours expected to work at the Final Four today. I am to arrive at 2:30 and then probably be able to leave around 11. It will be a great experience, but I WILL be tired tomorrow. If you see a sun burned fellow in the media area, underneath the baskets, on TV (probably wearing a bright shirt)...that's me.

0- common sense used by yours truly at the pool yesterday. Sun? Check. Pale Skin? Check. Suntan lotion? What's that?!?! Lobster red on the chest and stomach? Check. Pale Back? Check. It's officially pool season!
